Environmental Solutions In A Rapidly Changing World

Environmental, Social, and Health Impact Assessments (ESHIA)

  • Conducted several Environmental, Social, and Health Impact Assessments (ESHIA) studies in Sierra Leone for many companies, including Sierra Mineral Invest, Sierra Concrete, Hong Tai Granite Rock Quarrying, and Bravura SL Ltd. The studies/plans include:
    • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
    • Community Development and Participation Action Plans (CDPAPs)
    • Environmental Management and Monitoring Plans (EMMPs)
    • Public Disclosure Reports (PDRs) 
    • Mine Closure Plans (MCPs)

 

  • Completed Environmental & Social Management Plan for Sierra Concrete Plant in Sierra Leone.
  • Participated in the EIA for the Appalachian coal mining operations, for which one of Kencon’s principles received a Gold Medal from the US Government.

Site Investigations and Cleanup

  • Completed several large-scale environmental investigations and cleanups of hazardous waste sites for the US Army Corps of Engineers (Moses Lake and Umatilla) worth millions of dollars and involved persistent organic chemicals, petroleum, UXO, and heavy metals from old military installations and heavy metal mining.
  • Performed numerous contaminated site investigations in Nebraska, Washington State, and Washington DC, USA.

Program Development

  • Completed the development of national documents for the Sierra Leone government, including;
    • National Climate Change Financing Framework (CCFF) sponsored by UNDP in collaboration with Sierra Leone Environment Protection Agency (EPA-SL)
    • National Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (NCCSAP) sponsored by UNDP in partnership with Sierra Leone Environment Protection Agency (EPA-SL)
    • Five-Year Gender-Responsive National Environmental Quality Control and Management Police and Standards sponsored by UNDP in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change
  • Contributed (as a US team member) to developing international standards through the International Electrotechnical Congress in such areas as eco-design, recycling/reuse of electronics, life cycle analysis, and chemical and plastics test methodology.
  • Established environmental management programs for dangerous chemicals, e-waste recycling, and eco-design of electronics in the United States of America.
  • Established a program for phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals in developing countries.
  • Designed and implemented an environmental compliance program for Portland’s international and general aviation airports, marine terminals, and real estate holdings.
  • Engaged by the Pan-American Health Organization, conducted a 10-year review of Barbados’ Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan with findings adopted by the Barbados Ministry of Health.

CORPORATE DATA MANAGEMENT

  • Consulted for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago through KPMG on innovative, web-based methods for managing environmental information amongst agencies and departments.
  • Performed environmental data analyses, including non-parametric statistical analysis methods, to determine the impacts of industrial discharges into regulated waterways in the United States of America.

Education & Training

  • Conducted chemicals and e-waste recycling training for 12 major suppliers and in-house staff in Japan, China, Singapore, Redmond, Taiwan, and Ireland.
  • Led and conducted multimedia environmental compliance training and auditing for Weyerhaeuser, AT&T Wireless, the Government in Barbados, and several small enterprises in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Taught sustainability principles or greening to representatives from across the Government of Barbados in connection with its Greening of Government initiative.
  • Trained representatives from across the Government of Barbados on how to design and implement a comprehensive environmental health and safety (EH&S) system for its District Hospital in St. Philip and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
  • Advised four cities in Guanajuato State, Mexico, how to improve urbanization by coordinating solid waste management between cities.
  • Instructors for US nationwide risk assessment professional training courses/workshops.
  • Contributed (as a US team member) to developing international standards through the International Electrotechnical Congress in such areas as eco-design, recycling/reuse of electronics, life cycle analysis, and chemical and plastics test methodology.

PUBLIC HEALTH & SAFETY

  • Evaluated human health risks associated with airborne exposures to asbestos from an asbestos-containing facility in the USA.
  • Developed a health and safety plan to facilitate the necessary cleanup action.

Risk Assessments

  • Developed risk-based soil screening software for the US EPA
  • Utilized risk-based tools and methods to expedite residential and commercial property re-development efforts.
  • Developed and implemented risk management and prevention programs for facilities handling acutely hazardous materials.
